Surgery

The advanced capabilities within the surgical department at MPI Research are driven by the highly skilled surgeons on staff and state-of-the-art technology available within the surgical suites. Individualized protocols that can utilize a variety of species and customized surgical models meet or exceed standards established by accrediting and regulatory agencies.

Facilities
The four surgical suites (2,230 square feet/679.704 square meters) at MPI Research are equipped with a HEPA filtration system, inhalation anesthesia capabilities with positive pressure ventilation, active anesthesia scavenging, and advanced patient monitoring systems. The main surgical suite (1,200 square feet/365.76 square meters) has an adjoined viewing room. The Angiography Suite and Specialty Surgery Suites have attached preparation and recovery rooms much like those of the primary surgery suite. The fourth surgical suite is dedicated to rodent surgery.

Surgical Team
The MPI Research surgical team is knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated, with its surgeons certified by the Academy of Surgical Research (ASR). The well-trained technical staff administers and monitors anesthesia and animal recovery. Additional onsite support includes Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, MS and PhD scientists, Academy of Surgical Research specialists, staff veterinarians, and licensed veterinary technicians. To further enhance this superior level of service, the Department of Surgery utilizes the professional experience of outside physician, veterinary, and PhD level consultants, especially in the areas of cardiology, radiology, orthopedics, and urology. The broad spectrum of talent within the surgical department has benefited Sponsors as they formulate exciting new research proposals.

Plastics Laboratory
The Plastics Laboratory at MPI Research is a plastic embedding (GMA, MMA, Spurs) and IHC laboratory. Plastics embedding techniques are utilized primarily to test material composition (metallic implants), density characteristics of the tissue (undermineralized bone), or simply tissue size (nerve fibers). Although the MPI Research Plastics Lab is known for its specialized work in vascular metallic implant studies (stents), it also handles neuropathology (nerve embedding), orthopedic (vertebral and joint device implants), musculoskeletal (osteoporosis, osteosarcoma, etc.), tissue engineering (IV discs and dermatology), orthodontic and tensile analysis studies. While general histology methods (paraffin embedding) are often used for pathological evaluation in the aforementioned therapeutic areas, our specialized plastic embedding techniques, in addition to our histomorphometric analysis capabilities, permit a broader research scope that is highly desirable to MPI Research Sponsors.

Specialized Equipment
The surgical suites at MPI Research incorporate a vast amount of specialized equipment, including physiologic monitoring with Ponemah and DSI telemetry, two GE OEC 9800 and two GE OEC 9900 cardiac fluoroscopes, GE Vivid 7 Ultrasound, stationary X-ray and automatic-film processor, vascular stent processing, surgical microscope, and faxitron (high energy x-ray).
