To assure that MPI Research Sponsors receive expert evaluation and interpretation of pathological data, the company combines four laboratories - Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, Histology and Necropsy - as part of its general pathology services. A team of board-certified veterinary clinical pathologists and trained technicians utilize a multi-head microscope for in-house pathological reviews, briefings with Sponsors, peer reviews and for collaborative consultations with outside experts.
Services/Capabilities
Clinical Pathology
The clinical pathology facilities of MPI Research occupy approximately 3,200 square feet/279 square meters. The technological and human expertise available enables MPI Research provide expert evaluation and interpretation of data and to produce quality results for blood counts, urinalyses, and chemistry panels. Microscopic bone marrow evaluations are conducted routinely. More than one million tests are conducted each year, with the following clinical evaluations being routinely performed:
- Hematology
- Coagulation
- Urinalysis
- Serology
- Clinical chemistry
- Blood gas
- Fluid analysis
- Parasitology
The following specialized equipment is available
within the clinical pathology facilities:
- Olympus AU640™
- Olympus AU2700™
- Bayer Advia® 120
& Bayer Advia® 2120 Hematology Systems
- Bayer CLINITEK®
- Bayer CLINITEK 500 ®
- Bayer Rapidpoint™
- Stago co-ag analyzer
- Atlas Urinalysis
Using Clinical Pathology Supervisor and Worksheet Manager, in conjunction with Provantis NTT, MPI Research is able to efficiently and comprehensively capture data electronically, as well as necropsy and microscopic pathology observations. These functions results in increased reporting speed and eliminate opportunities for data entry error.
A large historical control database is maintained for multiple animal species. Experienced consultants conduct formal peer reviews and informal peer reviews are routinely held by the MPI Research staff pathologists to ensure that our Sponsors receive accurate, consistent, and top quality pathology data.
MPI Research also offers clinical pathology testing for samples sent from another site.
Anatomic Pathology
The area of anatomic pathology at MPI Research provides expert evaluation and interpretation of pathology data. The use of the Pathology module, ProvantisT, allows the pathologist to review necropsy and microscopic pathology observations, resulting in increased production speed of draft reports and eliminating opportunities for error during data input. Formal peer reviews are conducted by experienced consultants and informal peer reviews are routinely conducted by MPI Research staff pathologists to ensure accurate, consistent high quality pathology data.
Histology
The histology laboratory at MPI Research, occupying
6,000 square feet/557 square meters, has the
capacity to process approximately 150,000 tissues
monthly. Included within the Histology Laboratory
is a plastics
embedding facility (GMA, MMA,
Spurs) that also provides histomorphometric
analysis. The Pathology module of ProvantisTM supports the management of comprehensive histopathology
data, including mass tracking and organ weights.
Capabilities within the histology laboratory
at MPI Research, which has the capacity to
process 1,800,000 tissues annually, include:
- Routine preparation of paraffin-embedded and frozen sections
- Numerous special staining procedures in addition to immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical techniques
- Plastics embedding
capabilities (GMA, MMA, Spurs), including histomorphometric analysis, immunohistochemistry and wound tensile strength analysis
- Separate but coordinated areas for tissue trimming, processing and embedding, microtomy, staining, review/quality control, special stain preparation and wet tissue storage and services
Necropsy
An experienced veterinary pathologist has hands-on supervision of all necropsies that are at MPI Research. The 12,000 square-foot/1,115 square meter pathology facility houses a newly designed necropsy suite equipped with customized workstations, with small and large animal holding rooms. Necropsy services and capabilities include:
- Forty-Four custom-designed workstations for small-animal necropsies
- Six custom-designed, full-size hydraulic, down-draft necropsy tables for large-animal necropsies, providing capacity for 15 large-animal workstations
- Routine necropsy examinations of animals ranging from rodents to nonhuman primates and swine
- Routine and specialized procedures, including whole-body and upper-body perfusions, and perilymphatic perfusions of the inner ear for ototoxicity studies
- Specialized nerve extractions for neuroscientific studies
- Specialized equipment: Faxitron Digital Imaging
Use of the pathology module of Provantis enables data collection to be done at computerized work stations within this integrated laboratory.
