MPI Research Continues
Major Expansion Program!
Due to the steady
increase in demand for its services,
MPI Research is continuing the multi-stage
facility expansion project announced
in February. Last year, 37,000 square
feet of animal housing space was added
to the facility. Additional construction
at the main facility in Mattawan, MI
recently began, adding nearly 15,000
square feet to the existing 300,000 square
foot facility, resulting in 24 new animal
rooms. The new animal rooms will initially
house swine supporting the growing number
of surgical research models being developed
at MPI Research. This dedicated swine
facility will free up significant capacity
for other large animal species. Over
the long term, these rooms have been
designed for flexibility and can be used
for any research species. This “flexibility by design” grants
the ability to shift focus at any time to meet sponsor needs. Other concurrent
construction includes a new 10,000 square foot administrative building with new
facilities for Sponsors visiting MPI Research as well as space for the expanding
Quality Assurance Unit and finally a new 5,000 square foot Shipping and Receiving
building to better accommodate the increasing volume of animal shipments.
Plans for future expansions are also nearing completion, reaching out over the
next several years. These plans encompass up to 100,000 square feet of additional
space. The additional projects vary and include a large swine facility to support
the surgical program, administrative space, additional primate housing and other
multi-specie animal rooms. MPI Research is working with renowned architects,
planners and builders to develop an environment that provides increased synergies
between the multiple scientific disciplines available at MPI. Additionally, MPI
is extremely fortunate to have a top-notch Building Facilities staff that supplies
project management, design and engineering oversight, and space planning that
support and preserve MPI’s physical assets and strong scientific culture.
Bill Harrison, President and Chief Operating Officer for MPI Research, commented: “We
are extremely excited to continue these construction projects. Our growth over
the past several years has been at a rate that far outpaces our industry, and
this year’s growth has been no exception. In the past, growth in particular
areas, such as surgery models or safety pharmacology would stand out as the significant
drivers for business growth. This year, however, has seen double-digit growth
across almost all service areas. As a result of this tremendous support from
our Sponsors, we are accelerating our expansion plans for the main facility in
Mattawan to ensure room availability and fast study starts to meet our Sponsor’s
needs for the near term and well into the future.”
MPI Research exists to provide comprehensive non-clinical research that meets
the requirements of pharmaceutical, medical device, animal health and chemical
companies as well as governmental agencies as we partner together to bring safer,
healthier products to the world. MPI Research employees specialize in a wide
variety of scientific disciplines including toxicology, pharmacology, metabolism,
pathology, clinical pathology, reproductive and developmental biology, veterinary
science, neuroscience, experimental therapeutics, immunotoxicology, analytical
chemistry, computer science, regulatory science, and statistics.
